Go Aberdeen – Summer Trip 2007

Ann took the rest of the week off for me so today we woke up bright and early for breakfast at half past noon. We took the MTR out to Sheung Wan, one of the first parts of Hong Kong Island settled by the Brits. Being next Central, the business district with all the huge skyscrapers, Sheung Wan is an interesting mix of old and new.

We hit up a noodle joint Ann used to frequent when she worked in this area before coming to Japan. It was straight locals so I figured we’d get stared at, but then I forgot this was Hong Kong, and no one batted an eye. There were about 4 tables on each floor and 10 people at each table, so it was a tight fit, but it was great. And my favorite, cheap. Afterwards we walked around Sheung Wan a bit.

We walked through Sheung Wan to Central, then hopped on the MTR to Causeway Bay. We had some time to kill so we bought some movie tickets for Rush Hour 3 and walked around Time Square. We also stopped in at Hui Lau Shan, a dessert spot and got some XO raddish cakes and mango smoothies. All on the ol’ Octopus Card.

After the movie (nowhere as good as 1 or 2 but nowhere near as bad as everyone said) we grabbed some Shanghai style cuisine.

After stuffing our face we hopped on a double decker tram (25 cents USD, go Octopus) through Causeway Bay and Wan Chai into Central to hit up Lan Kwai Fong, the expat bar street.

After a few overpriced drinks between us we strolled down to the Central port and hopped on a ferry to the Kowloon side (Octopus style). Took some pics of Central from the Kowloon side before a freak storm kicked up and we scrambled for shelter. Fortunately, in HK when it rains it pours, but only for a few minutes at a time, after which we walked home.

Hong Kong is such an amazing city, and it’s completely changed my life plan. Unfortunately, theoretical physicist aren’t welcome in the city.
