Chowing on Cheng Chau – Winter Trip 2007

Today Ann and I took a ferry to Cheng Chau, a small island about an hour from Hong Kong Island. It’s a fishing village that is popular with beach going tourists, windsurfers, and people coming to commit suicide. The popularity of Cheng Chau as a suicide location has created many cheap vacation guest houses and apartments as superstitious Chinese people don’t like living in places where a couple of people may have offed themselves for some reason.

Boats leave for Cheng Chau from Central hourly, alternating between a large boat that takes an hour, and a smaller boat that takes 45 minutes. Ann was hoping for the larger boat as there is an upper deck where you can sit outside for a small extra fee, and thats the boat we got. It was December but it was still 25C.

After walking around for a bit, Ann talked one of the boaters into giving us a private tour around the cove. It was quite luxurious. We got to sit on a wooden stool at the bow of the boat, like movie stars.

After a trip around the island we sat down for some food. It was still a bit early so we killed time by putting back some beers and watching the sun set.
