Christmas in America, 2007 Style

And then I went to the States for Chrimmus. I had classes up until Friday the 21st, which meant the cheapest day to fly (other than Chrimbo Day) was Christmas Eve. I was a little worried traveling so close to the holidays. I would be leaving on the 24th, and arriving on the morning of the 24th. So I figured I would be facing a nightmare of a voyage, especially getting from San Francisco to my parents home. This is how I fared.

Final Days – Winter Trip 2007

On the last day in Hong Kong for the year, Ann and I did some shopping. She bought a cell phone, and I bought cans upon cans of pork, which I mailed back to Japan along with a few cases worth of Vita Soy and Lemon Tea. I think I spent more than she did.

Stanley – Winter Trip 2007

Stanley is on the Southeast side of Hong Kong Island. It’s most famous for being a popular tourist destination and home to a prison housing the most dangerous criminals in Hong Kong. Ann and I visited Stanley today. The tourist side mostly, not so much the prison side.

Chowing on Cheng Chau – Winter Trip 2007

Today Ann and I took a ferry to Cheng Chau, a small island about an hour from Hong Kong Island. It’s a fishing village that is popular with beach going tourists, windsurfers, and people coming to commit suicide. The popularity of Cheng Chau as a suicide location has created many cheap vacation guest houses and apartments as superstitious Chinese people don’t like living in places where a couple of people may have offed themselves for some reason.

Wan Chai Wandering – Winter Trip 2007

On the second day in town Ann had to go in for a half day at work. For a minute I thought about sleeping until 1pm when she got off. But then I got hungry, so I went out for a beef sandwich and noodles. Afterwards I hopped on the ferry to Central and walked to Admiralty and Wan Chai. Wan Chai isn’t as interesting in the day when all the debauchery-based places are closed. Admiralty has some tall buildings and not much else. So I took the MTR back to Tsim Sha Tsui to meet Ann.

Hong Kong – Winter Trip 2007

So I went to Hong Kong again. I had 16,000 frequent flier miles with JAL about to expire on Dec 31st. Unfortunately you can’t go very far with only 16,000 miles. My choices were between anywhere in Japan (was thinking either Okinawa or Hokkaido) or to Korea. Just when I’d settled on Hokkaido, I got wind that JAL was doing a %20 off campaign which meant a trip to China (20,000 miles) was now within reach. It would be cheaper to spend a week in Hong Kong than it would to stay in Japan for a week anyways. So I picked a week to take off school and this is what happened.

Finishing Off 2007

I spent most of the last couple months of 2007 on a big translation project so I didn’t have a lot of time to spend doing nothing, but for those times when I did have nothing to do I had my cell phone camera ready.
